What's the Medicare  Levy Surcharge?

If you are single and do not have any dependants your Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) threshold is $50,000 p.a. The threshold for families with one or no dependant children is $100,000 p.a. This threshold increases by $1,500 for each additional dependent child. There are various exemptions from having to pay the MLS. Speak with your tax adviser or the ATO for details. Please note Smart Start® covers individuals only and may not exempt families from the MLS.

About dependant cover with a family membership

On a family membership with Australian Unity, dependants are covered at no extra cost up to the age of 23, and up to the age of 25 if studying an approved full time course of study.

An eligible dependant is defined as a child, legally adopted child or stepchild who is unmarried and who has not attained the age of 23 years.

A student dependant is defined as a child, legally adopted child or stepchild who is unmarried and who has not attained the age of 25 years and who is pursuing a fund approved full-time course of study at school, college or university.

A fund approved course of study means secondary and tertiary academic study, trade apprenticeships and industry, employer or government training schemes, provided that the course of study results upon completion in the dependant being qualified to seek or maintain gainful employment in the general workforce and that the dependant is not, or will not remain, dependant upon the member for personal care, domestic or social support after having attended the course of study.
