History

In 1965 founder Roy Johnson's daughter, Lynne, died of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Roy's experiences during this time made it clear that there was a need for a health club that put its members' needs above all else. So in 1971, the Local Government Employees Medical and Hospital Club was established.

The Club started with 511 members in NSW, most of them directly recruited by Roy. He took an active role in the early days and worked hard for the fund right up until his retirement in 1986 when his Club had a healthy membership base of almost 40,000 in NSW.

Through the years the Club became Government Employees Health Fund, then added a number of other brands including Illawarra Health Fund, Senior Advantage, Mutual Health and Australian Country Health. These funds operated under the organisational umbrella of Australian Health Management Group (AHMG). By 2001 AHMG's combined membership rose to over 120,000.

In 2005 AHMG merged all its funds into a single national brand - ahm. With a fresh and energetic brand, ahm is now growing at well above the industry average, and continues to provide policy holders with comprehensive benefits, competitive prices and a range of health management programs at no additional cost.

ahm members and the Federal Court approved ahm’s demutualisation and merger with Medibank Private Limited. ahm is now part of the Medibank Group effective 15 January 2009.
