ahm health fund history

Founder Roy Johnson's daughter, Lynne, died of Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 1965. Roy's experiences during this difficult period made it clear that there was a need for a health club that would put it's members first, and so in 1971, the Local Government Employees Medical and Hospital Club was established.

Roy started the club by recruiting most of the 511 members in NSW, and worked hard for the fund right up to his retirement in 1986. By this stage the club had a membership base of nearly 40,000 in NSW.

Over the years the Club became Government Employees Health Fund, and additional brands including Illawarra Health Fund, Senior Advantage, Mutual Health and Australian country health were incorporated. The funds operated under the organisational umbrellas of Australian Health Management Group (AHMG), and by 2001 had a combined membership of over 120,000.

In 2005, all of AHMG's funds were merged into a single national health fund brand – ahm. ahm is now growing at well above the health insurance industry average, and provides comprehensive benefits, great prices and a variety of health management programs at no additional cost to its members.

Approval of ahm's demutualisation and merger with Medibank Private Limited was granted by ahm members and the Federal Court, and effective from 15 January 2009, ahm is part of the Medibank Private Group.
