PRIVATE health insurance can cost thousands of dollars a year but not having it could be a lot more expensive.
With interest rates rising, food prices climbing and health insurance premiums seemingly always on the way up, the temptation could be to turn to the free alternative of the public health system, or to self-insure.

"You should always review your cover at significant life stages such as the birth of a child, getting married, moving house or moving into retirement," Long says. "Think also about any new requirements you may have due to new hobbies. For example, you may want full cover for knee operations if you take up skiing as a family one year."
