Financial blow for infertile women

SUE DUNLEVY

Article excerpt:

MORE than 11,000 infertile women are facing a financial double whammy because of budget cuts to IVF and obstetric services that will cost $3800. They will have to pay $3,000 out of their own pocket for IVF after government subsidies for the procedure were cut back in the budget. And they will need to find a further $800 to have their pregnancy managed by a private obstetrician because the government wants to cut Medicare subsidies for private obstetricians. The cutbacks will also be a massive blow to the one in ten women who have the painful condition endometriosis where tissue normally found in the uterus grows on other body parts.
