TOTAL health spending in Australia has soared to more than $100 billion a year. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's report Health Expenditure Australia 2007-08 shows health spending in 1981-82 was just over $10 billion, but has now hit $104 billion, or about 9 per cent of gross domestic product... About 70 per cent of the health spending comes from governments, with about a third from individuals, private health insurers and other non-government sources.
