THE savings expected to flow from slashing in half the Medicare rebate for cataract surgery would be cancelled out if just one in eight patients seeks to avoid any extra costs by switching to public treatment. Eye surgeons made the claim yesterday in their latest broadside against the federal government's push to rein in spending on cataract surgery through a controversial budget measure that is heading towards rejection by the opposition in the Senate, possibly within days... Ms Roxon said, "We cannot afford a health system built around the financial self-interest of a few specialists or listed companies. The government will continue to make its decisions based on the needs of the entire community."
