Article excerpt:
MEDICARE rebates for the most common type of cataract surgery will be slashed by more than $280 from Sunday, after the federal government sidestepped a Senate vote blocking its planned cuts and announced a new set of reductions only slightly less severe. The government move prevents the disaster scenario of there being no rebates for cataract surgery at all from November 1 - which became a possibility after all non-government senators on Wednesday voted down the government's initial plans to cut cataract rebates by 50 per cent. But the reduced cuts announced yesterday ensure the bulk of the clawback will go ahead, opening the prospect of a running battle between federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon and the Senate over the issue.
