THE long-term direction of Australia's health reform drive has come under a fresh cloud with a health economist attacking the proposed Medicare Select scheme as ill-conceived and regressive. The National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission's final report, released in August, recommends a two-year examination of the feasibility of Medicare Select, a modified system of social insurance that involves private health funds offering competing health plans subsidised by taxes.... The idea has divided health experts, with some criticising the concept on the grounds of added bureaucracy and other issues, while others have commended it on the basis it can encourage services to be provided in areas that are ignored at present, such as mental health.
