THE cost of healthcare to governments, insurers and individuals grew by more than $9 billion in the 12 months to 2008-09, driven by increased spending on public hospitals and drugs. The overall bill of $112.8bn amounted to $5190 for every person in Australia -- an increase of 5.8 per cent or $6.2bn after adjusting for inflation. This represents an acceleration of the growth seen in recent years, which has averaged 5.4 per cent a year over the past decade.
