BETTER RUN FOR COVER
Families are being urged to shop around for their health insurance after the Federal Government gave insurers the nod to increase premiums by an inflation-busting five per cent.
The rise will cost the typical family about $100 a year in extra fees, but a specialist price-comparison website for health policies could help families save a large part of that increase by finding the best cover for their circumstances.
The site, www.moneytime.com.au, allows you to browse through a range of policies from major insurers, pick the features that you want, then compare prices.
“Before simply renewing your existing policy you should certainly spend a few minutes on the site to see if you can beat their quote,”a spokesman said.
Health Minister Nicola Roxon approved the five per cent rise after insurers had apparently asked for permission to raise premiums by 5.21 per cent.
Medibank said its increase would equate to an average of about $1 a week for single members and around $2.10 a week for families, or $109 a year.
Families on top-level cover with NIB will have to find an extra $329 a year.
